Free Electric Blanket Safety Tests
|
Gloucestershire’s over-50s are being urged to have their electric blankets safety checked by an expert before using them this winter.
Old and worn electric blankets can be lethal so Gloucestershire County Council's Trading Standards Service is offering a free safety checks as part of the Full of Life event being arranged by the council and NHS Gloucestershire.
Any Gloucestershire resident over the age of 50 wishing to have a blanket tested should bring it along to the event at Gloucester Rugby Club, Kingsholm, Gloucester, on 24th September.
No appointment is necessary.
Alternatively over 60s who are unable to get to the event can contact Gloucestershire Trading Standards on 01452 426784 for a free pick up and delivery service.
Trading Standards Officers advise that you should have your blanket checked if:
1. the fabric is worn or frayed
2. there are scorch marks anywhere
3. the tie tapes are damaged or missing
4. the flex is worn or damaged
5. any connections are loose
6. if your blanket has not been tested within the last twelve months
7. you are in any doubt about the condition of your blanket
Eddie Coventry, Head of Trading Standards, said: “In previous years we have found that a significant number of blankets have safety faults that could result in a tragic accident taking place.
“We are delighted to offer this service free of charge to residents of Gloucestershire who are over 50 to ensure that their blankets comply with current safety standards.
“If anyone has friends or relatives in the Gloucestershire area who may benefit from this service we would urge them to bring this scheme to their attention.”
The Full of Life 2009 event will showcase the services and activities available to support health and wellbeing in the over-50s. Go to www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/fulloflife for more information.
